On the International Day of Happiness — A Personal List

by Deborah Bass

Happiness depends upon ourselves.

Aristotle, ancient Greek philosopher

March 20 is the International Day of Happiness — a reminder to notice what truly lifts our lives.

When I think about happiness, my mind goes first to the most important things: my husband, my children, my family, and the gift of good health. Those are the true foundations of my happiness. Today, I’m turning my attention to the smaller joys.

Fun fact: the day itself was established by the United Nations to recognize well-being as an important shared goal around the world. Yay! for the United Nations.

I love making lists. They make me stop and really take note of the little things.

Happiness, it seems, is in the details.

Happiness may look different for each of us, but noticing the small moments can be a powerful place to begin. On a day set aside to reflect on well-being around the world, making space for our own personal sources of joy feels like a meaningful start.

What makes you happy beyond the big stuff?

I love this! The little things that are making me happy lately are the flowers blooming in my back yard, the birds visiting my bird feeder, and the cool breeze at night!

Wow! Flowers, birds, and wind — literally my FAVORITE things. We could sure use a cool breeze where we live. It’s HOT! ~ How lovely for you. Sounds like paradise. 🌈 🌸 🍃
