It’s All About Hair
Bumble & Bumble Sumoclay (available at Amazon) wins the prize for the most-asked-about product I use. I even keep a picture of it in a special album on my phone for easy sharing.
It’s the perfect concoction to sculpt my hair into place—and that’s no small feat. I have thick hair and lots of it. My stylist has to thin it out just to tame the weight; otherwise, I end up feeling frumpy and flat. But, this product is lightweight enough for most hair types.
It’s clay-like, so I just swipe a healthy dab from the container with my fingers and rub it briskly between my hands. Then I use my palms to lift the back of my hair—**starting behind the ears and moving up and out—**and scrunch the top, careful not to overdo it. I’m also mindful to target just the sections I want to lift or separate. Next, I pick and poke at it like Edward Scissorhands —making it sassy, a little wayward, and just spiky enough to make it interesting. I finish by piecing out my bangs and sideburns, here and there. The key is to push and pull until it looks great on you. And to keep it messy. Sassy.
The whole process takes a minute, tops— because the goal isn’t perfection. It’s imperfection.
I finish with a light spray of TRESemme hairspray (#4), and I’m set for the day.
