I love these bird feeders for their quick-clean feature. Simply squeeze the tabs at the bottom to clean the inside of the feeder or to dump wet seed after a storm. I rarely need to do this, but it’s convenient when I do.
These feeders are for Nyjer seed which attracts beautiful lesser goldfinches, as well as American goldfinches and pine siskins, at least to my home in the Bay Area of California. Doves and sparrows also feed daily on the seeds that fall to the ground. The doves have become part of our family! They are so used to my activity that rather than flee at the slightest noise, they stay and feed even when I’m barbecuing or attending to the garden. They even hang out during our garden parties much to the amazement of our guests!
Nyjer seed, also called thistle seed, is a gourmet seed.
It’s the perfect solution to feeding birds and not attracting rats and mice or growing unwanted plants. They do not germinate in our yards since the USDA requires that all Nyjer seed imported to this country be heat-treated to sterilize the seed. It’s a win for us and a win for the birds.
After trying several brands, I settled on Wagner’s Nyjer Seed Bird Food in a 20-pound bag from Amazon. They offer the best product at the best price. And with a Prime account, shipping is free. I love that the bag features a resealable zipper to keep in the freshness. Nyjer seed can easily dry out and while gourmet food to the birds, they are fairly picky. They won’t eat bird seed that’s old and dried out nor will they eat it if it’s been soaked in rainwater too long. Nyjer seed will mold quickly when it gets wet.
That said, my feeders rarely succumb to the wet weather. The holes are very small and unless it’s a downright storm, the seed stays dry.
One feature I like about these feeders is that they feed more birds than a lot of other brands—eight or 10 at a time.
One last note, don’t worry about transporting the 20 lb. bag to the feeders. I just carry the bag in a large bucket with a handle. Easy peasy!
I use bird feeders with a Quick-Clean like this and this.
Again, the quick-clean feature is a must!
Birds feeders and a water feature are a sure-fire way to get birds to your yard. Yes—if you build it, they will come! I promise. It may take a few weeks, but when they arrive, you’ll wonder how you ever got through your day without them.
Birds bring much joy! I never knew the beautiful finches, pine siskins and other birds existed in my area. But, a clean bird bath and Nyjer bird feeder brought them to me. ♥
