Where I Buy Fabulous Clothes Online

Fashion is art and you are the canvas.”

Original post July 3, 2020. Updated June 26, 2024.

I’ve finally found where to buy fabulous clothes online: personal stylists and consignment shops.

Fashion is a source of personal expression for me. Depending on my state of mind, I may dress in frilly girly-girl lace or a flutter-sleeved blouse one day and torn jeans, leather vest, and boots on another. I dress according to my mood. And finding a variety of stylish, this-is-so-me clothing is challenging. Especially now.

Luckily, personal stylists and consignment shops make for fabulous shopping. Your favorite styles, which you may not even know are your favorite styles yet, are just a click away.

I’ve narrowed my favorite services and shops to three.

FRONT DOOR FASHION

Front Door Fashion is premium clothing and therefore has premium pricing. But the clothes are of impeccable quality and they send you a lot of choices—like three complete outfits and more. Shipping to and from is free and there are no fees. They just charge a $100 deposit that is refunded or applied to your order since they are sending a lot of clothes. Makes sense. One box I received contained $1500 worth of clothing! I always score at least one fabulous piece that becomes a staple in my closet and lasts for years—an investment really.  My next box is on the way and it contains 19 items! I’m so excited to see what’s included.

ABOUT FRONT DOOR FASHION

If you could design a personal styling service, this would be it. Instead of receiving random pieces, you’ll get completely styled outfits. Plus, your stylist will send notes on how to wear them multiple ways. It’s more than just a buying-sending service. Keep only the items you love. There are no obligations. The risk is on them.

Cost: $100 average per item with NO up-front fees. That means ordering a box doesn’t cost you anything. You are charged $100 to your credit card, but that’s refundable if you decline all the items and send the box back (at their charge).

Frequency: Each box is at your request. This is not a subscription box and they do not auto-renew.

Don’t like items in your box? No worries. Send it back free and request another stylist.

And completing your style profile is really fun, too.

STITCH FIX

Stitch Fix is the most popular personal styling service.

I’m on my 29th box!

I’ve had both wonderful and disappointing boxes from Stitch Fix over the years. But, like most styling services, sometimes the box is a bust. The effort is worth it though. I get to try items I wouldn’t normally try and some of those become my favorite. That’s the great thing about having a personal stylist, you can get more of what you love or try something new. And you can always request a new stylist or keep the same one.

With Stitch Fix, you only get five pieces. I wish they would send more. But buy all five and you get a 25% discount on the whole lot.

Shipping to and from is also free. They charge a $20 fee for styling. If you choose nothing, you give up the $20. If you purchase anything, that cost gets applied, which means your styling is free. You can choose your price point, too. Stitch Fix has a wide range of price points and you can choose which works best for you. Don’t want to include jewelry, but want shoes? You have complete control over the type of items you get. You can also ask for something specific. For example, if you have a special occasion coming up or you are going on vacation. And completing your style profile is a lot of fun, too.

My new stylist Julie really nailed my vibe with my last box. I kept three out of the five items. I just couldn’t let them go! You can request her, of course.

Here is your special link to save $25 on your first order!

That means you risk nothing. No charges. No shipping fees. Just a chance to have a stylist pick some awesome items for you.

You get style cards for every item. And I received a personal note from Julie. She really listened to my needs and was spot-on in my style.

THIS BOX ROCKED!

March 2021 update:

This year I’ve purchased nearly all my clothes from Stitch Fix due to the Pandemic. But, I don’t have them style a box for me. Instead, I simply shop.

First, I have fun choosing my style. StitchFix gives you outfits and you “train” it to know your style. The more you choose from their styles each day, the better the program is at understanding your style. Then I shop the clothes. That’s it!

StitchFix curates styles for you and also offers pieces to compliment ones you’ve already purchased to complete your look.

You can shop for new items based on your liked styles, or you can shop for items to complete your look.

Shipping is free to you and if you don’t like the item, just mail it back in the same envelope with the enclosed prepaid label. You don’t even have to stand in line at the post office. There’s nothing to do or print. Just mail it back. It can’t be any easier.

I purchased these beautiful Kate Spade sneakers not available in stores!

THREDUP

ThredUp is a consignment store.

Yup. Yours truly buys used clothing.

Whaaaat? Hear me out.

I learned about ThredUp when I searched for a place to sell my used clothing after I retired. I waited two years and then felt comfortable selling my work attire. Some items, especially suit ones, I had only worn once or a few times due to weight loss or weight gain. Life is a roller coast, right? But there they hung…beautiful items from White House Black Market, Vince Camuto, Banana Republic…oh, the list goes on. And the shoes! Franco Sarto….Via Spiga…!

Selling on ThredUp

It was very easy to sell my items. When you join, simply print a label they give you and send it to them. You can box it (we all have boxes from Amazon Prime, right?) or they will send you bags for mailing. They are very particular as to what they keep and sell on your behalf, but that’s a good thing because that means they have only quality pieces you can purchase from them. I sent nearly a closet full of clothes and earned about $150. This included shoes. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but I was able to purchase some high quality, new-like hard-to-find items and it was worth it. Not only that, I chose for them to donate my items if they didn’t sell and that meant I didn’t have to go to Goodwill. But, you can also request that your items be returned at your cost.

Buying on ThredUp

You can search for your favorite brands or simply browse.

You can also set up searches and alerts. When your favorite brand or item in your size becomes available, you can get alerted. I do this for the brand Porto and XCVI. These are pricey items and finding a Porto piece is rare. They only sell from boutique stores. One Porto item can sell new for $300-$400 and are of such great quality, I can see why they rarely get resold. That’s part of their allure. I only like specific items from Porto, but I have a few pieces that I can never imagine letting go. Recently, I scored a teal dress for about $40 from ThredUp on an item that originally sold for 8x that much.

Just last week I scored two pairs of XCVI pants. These breezy, super comfy and quirky cropped pants usually sell for about $100 each, but I bought them used for $25 each. They fit perfectly and I’ve been practically living in them. They look brand new—flawless even.

You can choose the quality you’d like to receive. I choose only to see “Brand New” or “Like-New” items, nothing less. So, I’m not burdened with items I don’t want to sift through. I also only see my sizes. It’s very customizable.

Sign up today and get up to 45% off your first order.

Which service will you try? Or, why not try them all?

Stay well. Be happy. Shine.

XOXO

Deborah
