Fresh Flowers Are Always a Great Idea

Welcome Flowers 1280x853 3

Nothing says Welcome to My Home! like fresh flowers.

I especially love to host them in the kitchen where I can smell them and enjoy their beauty throughout the day.  How fresh is that? There’s just something special about fresh flowers in a kitchen that says we live here.

I wish I had a garden to pick from, but even if I did, I couldn’t get the variety nor selection of flowers at the time I’d want them. I like flowers on demand to whatever inspires my whim.

White hydrangeas in winter?

Yes, please!

They have a gorgeous, albeit tamed selection and the bunches range from $2.99 to $9.99. I prefer to buy bunches of same flowers and make my own arrangements rather than premixed *yawn* flowers. I choose flowers that inspire me either by their color or texture and then walk around the bins, placing them next to other flowers and greenery for interesting combinations. This really helps me to think outside the traditional pairings that are so common.

The interesting thing is, I get the most compliments on the simplest arrangements, usually one type of flower with some greenery. I always use the rule of thumb for gardening and that is to use an odd number of flowers—say, three or five large hydrangeas. Then I cut them different heights and arrange them asymmetrically. Flowers don’t grow perfectly in nature so the more natural the arrangement looks, the more the emphasis is on the flowers, their wild and organic beauty—and not my effort.

Happy arranging!
